Sierra Delta Spotlight: Veteran Gary and His Life Buddy Maggie
Sierra Delta is thrilled to bring you another story in our new blog series dedicated to celebrating the individuals within our community. Today, we introduce you to Gary Joslin, a Marine Corps Veteran whose journey has led him from Vietnam to his Life Buddy, Maggie.
A Glimpse into Gary’s Service
Gary knew boot camp would be rough. Before heading to Marine Corps boot camp, Gary spent his post-high school summer hiking 1,000 miles in the California High Sierras and frequently biking. Thankfully, this physical preparation paid off, and boot camp was a breeze!
Gary was assigned as a postal clerk (MOS 0161) in Vietnam. Initially, he was attached to the 3rd MAF and later transferred to the 1st MAW that manned the post office at Freedom Hill. They also made daily postal runs to units stationed in the bush.
It wasn't long before Gary’s Sergeant rotated out, and Gary was in charge of their unit. His Lieutenant knew he could handle the position, and Gary expected to spend four months there. However, a month later, the Lieutenant came in to say, "Pack your gear – you're headed home!"
A Few Bittersweet Details
In a turn of events, Gary was sent home early on the Oriskany Aircraft Carrier, a decision influenced by President Nixon's promise to reduce troops in Vietnam. Thanks for the ride, Navy! After arriving in San Diego, Gary expected 30 days' leave before reporting to duty to serve his two years. Unexpectedly, Gary was discharged on April Fool's Day, 1970, a decision he has often felt regrets over.
Maggie’s Story: More Than Just a Pet
Gary adopted Maggie from a home that was going through a divorce. Although he had initially committed to another dog, a 6-month-old Shepadoodle currently looking to be rehomed, Maggie's situation compelled him. When the owner of Maggie called asking him to come get her or she was going to the pound, Gary made a decision. His granddaughter picked Maggie up, and the pairing was meant to be!
Smart and loving, Maggie quickly became a significant part of Gary's life, filling a void after the passing of his wife three years ago. A testament to Gary's commitment and with Sierra Delta's assistance, Maggie is doing great in her training!
Connecting with Sierra Delta
Gary's introduction to Sierra Delta came through “Lucky Dog,” a TV show where animal trainers rescue difficult-to-love and untrained dogs that find themselves at the neighborhood animal shelter.
"Finding Sierra Delta has been a blessing. Signing up was easy."
His area didn't have trainers listed when he first joined the Sierra Delta Circle Community, so he was encouraged by the Sierra Delta team to find local trainers to sign up for our trainer network. The trainer Gary decided to work with was NWA Canines due to its proximity and expertise in training to the Service Dog level.
A Positive Training Experience
Gary asked NWA Canines about the working relationship with Sierra Delta, to which they responded that both signing up for the Circle platform and payment have been positive experiences. Our Sierra Delta community not only consists of Veterans and dedicated supporters, but we have an extensive network of vetted training organizations we encourage our Veterans to use.
Training with NWA Canines has been enriching for both Gary and Maggie. He mentions that if it wasn't for Sierra Delta, he might be training Maggie through YouTube videos. Working with a professional trainer has greatly impacted the training experience.
"It is so nice to work with a knowledgeable, friendly trainer. They have been great in regards to answering questions and helping in between lessons."
Beyond Today: Plans for the Future
Gary is now finding ways to help his local community and give back to Sierra Delta. Dogs have always been a part of his life, and after a doctor's visit in January, he knows he will need a service dog in the future. Therefore, Gary took action and decided to start Maggie's training early.
"She is doing great in her training and is truly a life buddy."
A Parting Word of Advice from Gary
Gary cares immensely for Maggie, and he emphasizes the importance of planning not only for his future but for her future as well. At 72, he's made arrangements for Maggie's care after his time, ensuring she's in safe hands with his trusted trainer. He believes it's essential for everyone to think ahead and make plans for their beloved companions.
As Sierra Delta continues to impact the lives of Veterans and their families, experiences like Gary's remind us of the profound difference a Life Buddy can make. If you are a Veteran interested in our programs, join our Circle Community today and get started on your own Life Buddy Training journey.
