Meet Veteran Tim Neff and His Life Buddy, Jasper

Sierra Delta is thrilled to bring you a story in our new blog series dedicated to celebrating the individuals within our community. Today, we introduce you to Tim Neff, an Air Force Veteran whose journey has led him from the Air Force to finding his Life Buddy, Jasper.

The Call to Serve

Tim Neff served in the Air Force for 5.5 years, motivated by increased terrorist attacks against the United States in the 1980s. He was stationed at multiple bases, including Lackland AFB in Texas, Keesler AFB in Mississippi, Lajes Field in Portugal, and the USAF Academy.

Tim describes his time in the military as transformative. Tim began his service as a Chapel Management Specialist, supporting the chaplains and religious needs of the bases where he was stationed. He also had a secondary role in security police, aiding in extra security details. Later, he retrained into disaster preparedness, a position encompassing a variety of responsibilities, including training on personal protective equipment and actions for NBC warfare. He learned the significance of teamwork and the power of leaning on those around him.

Discovering Sierra Delta

Sierra Delta is dedicated to meeting each Veteran where they are in their transition from military to civilian life. We do so by offering training grants that cover a variety of skills to enhance the relationship between a Veteran and their dog, aka Life Buddy. At Sierra Delta, we define a Life Buddy as a pet, a professionally trained service dog, or anything in between. We love to celebrate all dogs and the unique bonds they have with humans.

Tim found Sierra Delta through a Facebook post and was struck by our mission and professionalism.

"Sierra Delta has their stuff put together. The info, the videos, the resources...they actually get back to you and don't forget about you. They really have an 'I give a care' attitude. Plus, they do love dogs!"

This led him to join the Sierra Delta Life Buddy Program, where he instantly became part of a Circle Community centered around empowerment, purpose, and innovation.

Life Buddy Training: An Enriching Experience

Tim's Life Buddy, Jasper, is an American Cocker Spaniel currently undergoing training at Shepherd's K-9 Training in Burnettsville, Indiana. Tim finds joy in every training session, watching Jasper's understanding of commands and cues grow.

“Going through training with him is so cool; when I see him, things just seem to click.”

Facing Challenges

Like any new experience, there are challenges. For Tim, the main challenge is managing his own fears and anxieties. He takes comfort in knowing that the Sierra Delta team is always there to offer support if something goes wrong. He also takes comfort in his Life Buddy. For Tim, Jasper is more than a pet; he's a constant source of support.

"I can relax and enjoy things by knowing he is there. He has my back 24/7."

A Message to Other Veterans

Tim encourages other Veterans to take advantage of Sierra Delta's Life Buddy Training Grants by joining the Circle Community.

"Just do it. If you feel you need it, just apply. If you have questions, just ask. They will help. Sierra Delta is real, and they are eager to help. You would be surprised at the results!"

Tim's story is a testament to Sierra Delta's commitment to empowering Veterans through tailored support, dog training grants, and a strong community. Jasper, Tim's Life Buddy, has brought companionship, a renewed sense of purpose, and happiness into Tim's life.

As Sierra Delta continues to impact the lives of Veterans and their families, stories like Tim's remind us of the profound difference a Life Buddy can make. Stay tuned for more stories from our Veteran community as we continue to celebrate these inspiring partnerships!
