A Marine's Journey & His Lifelong Bond with Brizzo

At Sierra Delta, we believe in the power of storytelling, in sharing experiences that resonate, and in celebrating the remarkable journeys of our Veteran Alumni.

Our new blog series aims to share the stories of the brave men and women who have served our nation. These stories are not just about the battles they fought overseas but also about the challenges they overcame upon returning home and the incredible bonds they've forged with their Life Buddies. Each narrative is unique, filled with lessons, inspirations, and the indomitable spirit of a soldier.

We invite you to journey with us as we delve into these personal tales of resilience and companionship!

Lessons from the Battlefield

In his 13 years of service, Mike learned invaluable lessons about discipline, resilience, respect, accountability, and the meaning of true brotherhood. Even 15 years after leaving the military, he continues to cherish the bond he formed with his brothers-in-arms. Two principles he treasures and lives by to this day are "Once a Marine, Always a Marine" and "Semper Fidelis" - Latin for "Always Faithful.”

Confronting Challenges

Every soldier faces challenges, and Mike's journey was no exception. The constant tests of mental fortitude were grueling, from physical exhaustion and food deprivation to confronting the fear of the unknown and losing brothers in Iraq. Yet, these adversities shaped Mike, teaching him to adapt and persevere no matter what life throws at him.

“Sometimes you have to re-find yourself to be able to accept the situation, adapt, and move forward.”

A Marine’s Reflection:

Despite moments of regret and wishing for better outcomes in some circumstances, Mike is proud of his service, and he would do it all over again as long as the same Warriors were to his left and right.

He reminisces fondly about serving his country to protect our freedoms and flag, expressing deep gratitude for the experience. As he puts it, it was the "best job I ever had!"

Mike’s Connection to Sierra Delta

Mike's connection to Sierra Delta is personal. He had served alongside our founder, BJ Ganem, and wanted to support the mission. Mike appreciates our commitment to providing tailored dog training to fit each veteran's unique needs. And when his Life Buddy, Brizzo, needed surgery, Sierra Delta offered support and resources during a challenging time.

“The support I got from Sierra Delta and the resources I had access to during that time was literally a lifesaver. Something I am forever grateful for.”

Meet Brizzo - Mike's Life Buddy and Best Friend

Brizzo, a 6-year-old German Shepherd, has been Mike's steadfast companion since 2017. She made an immediate impact on his life and, from 8 weeks old, went to work with Mike every day, creating an unbreakable bond between the two. Trained by Dean Salamone in Elkhorn, WI, and with the assistance of Semper Fi Fund, Brizzo underwent obedience, tracking, and protection training. What is truly special is her innate ability to sense Mike's emotional state. Whether Mike feels stressed, anxious, or angry, Brizzo is always there to offer an encouraging nudge.

“She wants to let me know she is there, it’s ok, and basically to just chill out.”

The bond between them is evident: Brizzo is more than a pet; she's a steady and constant companion. While Mike does not need to take Brizzo everywhere with him as she is not a Service Dog in the traditional sense. As a Life Buddy, she is a daily reminder of how strong the bond between a dog and a human can be.

“There are things a lot of us have gone through at different points in our lives that can be unimaginable or unexplainable. Many times, this is difficult for civilians to understand. My Life Buddy always understands, and she is there for me unconditionally without any judgment.”

The Continued Impact of Sierra Delta

Mike especially appreciates the ongoing training videos available to all veterans within the Sierra Delta Community, which ensure that their Life Buddies remain proficient in their training. He also had the opportunity to contribute by participating in video demonstrations with Brizzo.

“The support system and resources offered by Sierra Delta are game-changers for veterans.”

A Testimony for the Life Buddy Program

Brizzo has helped Mike mentally and emotionally, especially during tough anniversaries or when memories resurface. She’s there to help him stay grounded, and Mike wants ALL Veterans to know that Sierra Delta is a resource for them.

“If you think your life could be positively impacted by having a Life Buddy, then you need to reach out and get enrolled with Sierra Delta.”

Sierra Delta is not just a nonprofit for the wounded or disabled, but it is a nonprofit for ALL Veterans. Mike truly believes in the Sierra Delta mission to help all Veterans have access to tailored dog training that fits their lifestyle.
